The Main

On September 14, 2006 in Different Dinner Project

We got home a bit late after touring Shannon's parents around. They decided it was too late for me to make dinner, so we made another revisit to a restaurant we dined at when we first came to this city. This time it did not happen on purpose however. We were going to check out Schwartz's, an infamous smoked meat place, but since it was overwhelmingly packed (as usual) we went across the street to The Main. Turns out this is where we settled on having our first Montreal smoked meat sandwich before, except we hadn't remembered what it was called.

I ordered the special; a smoked meat sandwich with poutine, coleslaw, a pickle and a coffee. The coleslaw itself had grated pieces of dill pickle in it, which made it all that much better. Whatever style of coleslaw this would be called is far better than the creamy coleslaw most people serve. It was dressed more like a cabbage salad with a vinaigrette, with a hint of sweetness. I really enjoyed it. Pickles are more of Shannon's thing, but I can tell a good pickle when I taste one. I still gave half of it to her.

Poutine is sort of the antithesis of healthy eating. I also don't find it particularly appetizing. There is only one place I've ever really had a poutine that I enjoyed and it was the first time I'd ever had it. It was in a little Korean restaurant in a sketchy hotel in Grande Prairie and it's now closed. They served poutines the size of turkeys for only . All of the poutines we've had here have just never come close and I've always been disappointed. This was one was okay. It definitely helped that I was absolutely starving before we got there. The smoked meat was perfect and sandwiched between 2 slices of rye with a little bit of mustard. I have no idea how much meat is actually in those sandwiches, but it's safe to say that it's enough. Montreal smoked meat is definitely not something to pass upon when visiting here, and a little indulgence I'll dive into now and then now that we're living here. I left the restaurant with a little pain in my belly, quite satisfied.

Still the best poutine I’ve ever had! Though it was a little creeppy when they had the sago tea…
