24 Hour Falafel

On September 01, 2006 in September

There's a 24 hour Falafel place on the corner and, since there's a soft spot in my heart for falafel, I decided to check it out. Since I couldn't have falafel, I ordered the combo platter. Since my French is horrible, I couldn't actually read what was in it, but I figured I'd be happily surprised. There was lamb and chicken with a garlicky yogurt. I filled up my pita with that. This alone would have been enough to fill me up. Normally I prefer lamb over pretty much anything, but the chicken was superbly cooked and seasoned.

The salad that accompanied it had tomatoes, onions, lettuce, parsley and what tasted like marinated turnip. It was pink, which is the only thing that makes me question if that's what it was. Perhaps it's marinated in red wine vinegar. In any case, the whole meal was extremely satisfying and I only wish that I could live off of this stuff. I kind of wish I could've picked from the salad bar since there was a cold lentil and brown rice dish that looked really good I would've substituted for the pink turnip one. I've settled on my third project to do after A Food Year now; a falafel blog.

One man ran the show by himself and spoke no English aside from his menu and very broken French. He looked exhausted, as though he'd been working all 24 hours worth of shifts for the last couple of days. However, he matched my enthusiasm when I told him his food was excellent and that I would definitely return, though I have no idea what it is he actually said in response.
