Sourdough Bread

3 cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon active dry yeast
2 teaspoons sugar
1 cup warm water
1 teaspoon salt

  1. Combine 2 cups flour, yeast, water and sugar in a bowl. Cover and seal for 3 days.
  2. Stir in salt and remaining flour to form a soft dough.
  3. Knead on a floured surface, transfer to a greased bowl and allow to rise until doubled in bulk, about 1 hour.
  4. Punch down dough, separate into 2 pieces and shape into rounds. Transfer to a greased baking sheet and allow to rise until double in bulk again.
  5. Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
  6. Brush with egg wash if desired and bake until done, about 30 minutes.

Makes 8 servings

I’ve learned a lot about sourdough since this and will definitely have to try it again… the way it’s supposed to be done!
