The Fontaine’s

On August 19, 2006 in Different Dinner Project

One of my oldest friend's family invited us out for a barbecue this afternoon. Actually, it's been a plan in the works for the last couple of weeks, since combining so many schedules has been a little awkward. Up until recently I've left out people's names, other than Shannon's, and this entry is really hard to type based on that. I've known the Fontaine's since early elementary school and I've shared my Christmas' there, instead of with my own family, since my teenage years. It would have been inexcusable had I not visited with them before leaving. The parents are from Montreal, so they gave us the approving nod before seeing us off.

They live out of town on a quonset where the running water is undrinkable. The struggle to cook and wash dishes by pouring water from enormous jugs always baffles me. Their oven had broke a while back, so they bought a big BBQ. The oven has been fixed since then, but over time their dad has grown a fondness for barbecued everything from meat to fruit. We had 2 different kinds of roast beef; one roasted in the oven and one cooked on the barbecue, skewers of barbecued strawberries, melon, zucchini, peppers and red onions, barbecued cauliflower and fresh garden cherry tomatoes. I also had purple beans for the first time, that were basically identical to green beans, except that the beans inside were purple. The rest of the purpleness washed away in the water. Shannon and I brought store bought potato and macaroni salad.

I think I had left this entry with the intention of writing more, but several weeks later when I'm actually able to upload it, I'm tired and can't be bothered. The food and company was good. Enough said.
