Sorrentino’s
My mom managed to get away from the office for one day before we leave to Montreal. Finding staff in Alberta is about as difficult as winning the lottery right now. We went to Sorrentino's with my grandma. For the same reason that mom could only visit for a day, the service was awful. There were two waitresses and only one cook in the kitchen. Our appetizers took over half an hour to arrive. Thankfully they were very well done. We ordered the scallops and shrimp that came in a spicy chili sauce which were easily the best scallops I've ever had. It's very easy to overcook scallops and that seems to happen all too often. The sauce was also very complimentary. The other appetizer was stuffed roasted red peppers, which is basically what inspired our Valentine's Day dinner of Roasted Red Pepper and Goat Cheese Stuffed Chicken. This is one of my favorite flavor combinations. Actually, pretty much anything and goat cheese wins me over. The portion of this appetizer seems to get noticeably smaller each time I visit though.
An hour and a half and several manhattans later, my chicken Portofino arrived. It was smothered in a light mustard sauce and stuffed with mushrooms and prawns. I could not actually pick out any prawns or mushrooms from the chicken or notice how it was stuffed at all, but the flavor of them was definitely noticeable. I enjoyed this dish, but the side vegetables were a little disappointing. Sorrentino's usually does amazing things with potatoes and serves grilled root vegetables, but instead we got spinach, squash and tomatoes. This makes sense since it's more seasonal, but the root vegetables were definitely missed. We skipped dessert, even though they have an excellent chocolate pate, and said our goodbyes. Saying goodbye to mom was hard, but I'll be back for Christmas, which is likely the next time I would have seen her anyway.
