Garlic Bread Sticks

1 teaspoon sugar
1-1/2 teaspoons active dry yeast
1-1/4 cup warm water
1 tablespoon olive oil
1 teaspoon salt
3 cups flour
2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil
4 cloves garlic, minced
1 teaspoon dried oregano
- Combine sugar, yeast and water in a large bowl and set aside until foamy.
- Stir in oil and salt, then gradually incorporate enough flour to form a soft, smooth dough.
- Form dough into a ball and transfer to a greased bowl. Cover with a clean towel and allow to rise for an hour.
- Pound dough flat and shape into a rectangle about 16" x 8". Combine olive oil, garlic and oregano and brush over top of the dough.
- Allow the dough to rise for about 10 minutes, then slice into 1" strips. Twist the strips slightly and transfer them to a greased baking sheet.
- Bake until golden brown, about 12-15 minutes.
