Tokyo Icheban #2

On July 12, 2006 in Different Dinner Project

Another trip to Tokyo Icheban, this time with my grandma. We were busy getting things ready for a garage sale we are having this weekend and she offered to take me out for lunch afterwards. She said she wasn't hungry so we could go anywhere I wanted. I have been craving sushi like mad for the last week, so I picked Tokyo Icheban again. The last time I went there I didn't have sushi at all, just noodles and yam. This time I ordered a boat load for myself. The little picture on the menu was extremely misleading as to how much food I was actually going to receive.

There was no indication that the boat was meant to be shared, especially because there was a "for two" boat listed right below it, but this was definitely more than one person should reasonably eat. Try as I might, I still had leftovers. There was quite an assortment of tempura: yam, potato, butternut squash, zucchini, shrimp and eggplant. There were 3 types of rolls, none of which had toasted sesame seeds, which was a crucial component of what I was craving to begin with. One was stuffed with mushroom and caramelized shallots, as well as something else I'm not particularly certain of. The second was stuffed with crab, roe and cucumber. The third was just a tiny one that had cucumber and something to sauce it up a bit.

My chopstick skills seem to have improved since my last visit, despite having no actual practice in the use of them since then. The actual eating action feels forced and my hand gets cramped after a while, but it's much more fun than using a fork. I suppose a small pair of tongs would be the best option when it comes to picking up a sushi roll. You know, in case just your fingers weren't allowed to touch anything on the plate. Alright, so perhaps eating all of this food with your hands would be the best way of going about it, but I just like the eating of using large toothpicks to do so instead.

The incredibly strong pot of green tea went straight to my head again and I found myself buzzing around for the next hour before promptly burning out an hour into my shift at work. All in all it was a good experience yet again, though the service was not quite as good in the afternoon as my previous experiences have been at night.
