Indian Chick Peas

19 ounces canned chick peas
1 medium onion, chopped
1 bay leaf
4 cloves
1 cinnamon stick
1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes
1/4 teaspoon black pepper
1/8 teaspoon turmeric
1/4 teaspoon cumin seeds
1/2 teaspoon garam masala
2 tablespoons olive oil
1 tablespoon Tamarind Chutney (optional)

  1. Heat oil in a skillet over medium-high heat and fry the spices to release their aromas, about 15 seconds.
  2. Reduce heat to medium and saute onion until tender.
  3. Add the chick peas, cover and continue to cook for about 15 minutes.
